Heart Health Testing

When it comes to testing your cardiovascular health, there are a few very important things you should first know!

  1. Cholesterol is not the enemy

    • Cholesterol is a vital hormone in your body

    • It serves as a precursor for your body to make important adrenal hormones like aldosterone to control sodium levels and cortisol to control energy levels.  Cholesterol is also a precursor for your sex hormones DHEA, progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone.

  2. Your standard lipid panel is only the introduction to your heart health story

    • A standard lipid panel contains cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL and sometimes VLDL

    • While HDL is touted as "good" and the rest are "bad," your body cannot be bothered wasting time or energy making something it doesn't need.  Let that sink in.

    • All of these lipids are needed in the body in certain concentrations.  It is possible that your risk of heart disease is elevated with elevated lipids, but FURTHER TESTING MUST BE DONE BEFORE ACTION CAN BE TAKEN.

  3. Advanced Imaging may be needed

    • Blood tests are wonderful because they are quick, easy, and are much cheaper than stress tests, angiograms, and echocardiograms.

    • Advanced imaging will give you the most definitive outlook on your cardiovascular health, but isn't always warranted.

The Cleveland Heart Lab Inflammation Pannel

  • If you have an abnormal lipid panel, history of heart disease, family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, shortness of breath, dizziness, and/or lightheadedness; this test is a necessity.

  • This cardiovascular inflammation panel is the test I trust the most to give me an accurate depiction of my patients' risk of heart disease, or to monitor their current treatment.

  • Tests 7 specific markers of cardiac inflammation to assess the state of your cardiovascular health without the need for advanced imaging.

  • Nowhere on this test will you find the things a standard lipid panel is testing.  That is because those markers are nonspecific and tell us nothing about cardiovascular health.

The test can be ordered for you anywhere in the country.  All you have to do is take the order to a blood draw site near you for collection and the rest is taken care of!
